Wet Liposuction
Wet liposuction is a term you can contrast with dry liposuction. Dry liposuction is defunct—that was a form of liposuction wherein the operation was performed under general anesthesia and nothing was injected into the body prior to the fat removal. Wet liposuction, on the other hand, derives its name from the fluids that are injected into the body prior to the fat removal.
How does Wet Liposuction Work?
With wet liposuction, a saline solution is injected into the fat area that is going to be worked on. The solution generally contains a mixture of anesthesia which will numb the area and epinephrine, which reduces the size of the capillaries in the area by causing them to contract. The idea behind wet liposuction is to prevent blood loss by constricting the size of local apillaries; since less blood can move through them, less blood is in the area to be lost. The solution also helps to break down the fat in the area, making it easier and safer to remove. The reduction in blood loss makes wet liposuction safer than dry liposuction, and also can prevent bruising and swelling. There are specific limits in the amount of fat to be removed with no risk at all!
Wet Liposuction Types
One of the most common Wet Liposuction types is Tumescent Liposuction. Actually you can look at tumescent liposuction as a type of wet liposuction which uses more fluid. The increase in the amount of fluid delivered to the site causes the site to swell. That’s what the word “tumescent” means—swollen. The fluid is siphoned out with the fat so that the body’s fluid balance is maintained.
Another popular wet liposuction technique is Super Wet Liposuction. Super Wet liposuction utilizes a smaller amount fluid and local anesthesia comparing to other Wet Liposuction techniques (for example it injects half the amount of anesthesia inserted with Tumescent Lipo).
Besides we should mention Water Jet Assisted Liposuction (also known as Body Jet) which is another “wet” technique where a pressurized stream of saline (water and salt) is injected inside fat tissue. This stream can loosen up fat cells in order to be removed via suction!
Wet liposuction is actually an umbrella term that describes a number of techniques and which has undergone a lot of evolution over the years. Older wet liposuction techniques were more effective at preventing blood loss than dry liposuction by a long shot, but still weren’t as good as many current techniques which have been derived from wet liposuction. Of all of those techniques, tumescent liposuction is probably the one which is most efficient at stemming blood loss, keeping it down to approximately 1-2 tablespoons of blood. If you want to compare and understand how much this is, this is about the same amount of blood which you have to give for pre-operative tests.
Cost
As we mentioned above there are many techniques under the Wet liposuction tag. Each of them has a different cost! According to Realself.com the average cost of Tumescent Lipo is at $4775, the cost of Super Wet Lipo is at $2500 and the cost for Water Jet Assisted Liposuction is at $5250!
Body Areas to be treated
Wet Liposuction techniques can literally treat every body area you need to improve! For example with Wet Lipo you can remove fat from waist, abdomens, thighs, buttocks, back, neck, chin, flanks or arms!

Our Advice
So just remember when you’re shopping around that you’re likely to hear a lot of different techniques referred to as “wet liposuction”. All the term means is that a solution is going to be injected into the fatty layer prior to its removal—and since dry liposuction is defunct for reasons relating to safety, pretty much all the techniques you’re going to find out there are going to fall under this umbrella (of course there are also some other options like laser or ultrasonic liposuction). Be sure to ask for more details so that you can understand exactly what you’re going to be getting if you go with a specific type of surgery. Our advice is to particularly look for a surgeon who can offer you tumescent liposuction using only local anesthetics, since this is perhaps the safest option out there which entails the smallest amount of blood loss.
